When making Swedish meatballs, people typically choose a mix of ground beef and pork to achieve the ideal balance of fat content and texture. However, some more traditional recipes also incorporate venison.

In addition, you’ll need breadcrumbs soaked in butter, a bit of mustard, an egg, and onions sautéed in butter. After combining these ingredients in the right proportions, shape the ground meat into small balls and fry them until golden brown in a high-temperature pan.

In Turkey, these meatballs are known as “köfte” and are made with a mixture of beef and lamb, combined with common ingredients such as onions, eggs, parsley, Japanese breadcrumbs, regular breadcrumbs, and salt to enhance the texture—although modern Swedish meatballs typically use pork as the primary meat.

However, the origin of the recipe is not the crucial point. What matters is that the meatballs were refined and popularized in Sweden, becoming one of the must-try delicacies in the country. Even if you don’t visit Sweden, you can savor the unique flavor of Swedish meatballs at IKEA, a global chain that offers them worldwide.
